Ryan Addams (Vassago) - founder & legacy
Ryan Addams, known in-game for decades as Vassago, created Moongate Online and led development through the Ingenii era. CREDITS records that Materia Magica was "originally developed by Ryan Addams, Vassago, and many other immortals." MobyGames credits him as Lead Writer, Designer, and Developer. Outside Alyria he was also known for PhoEniX.irc, a widely used IRC script in the 1990s.

Ingenii Interactive published Moongate and early Materia Magica from Austin. Quest-code headers from the period cite Ryan Addams by name; community sites later used moongate.net subdomains and gameservices@ingenii.com before Towne forums and materiamagica.com supplanted them. Long-term players knew Ryan and Vassago as the same person - not a secret inside the core community. MUDStats reviews from the Ingenii years describe friendships forged in-game and in real life; clans, alliances, Towne boards, and later Discord town halls grew from that social fabric.
Ryan Addams passed on 26 December 2022 (Edmond, Oklahoma). See the memorial linked below. Veterans who had played with him for years mourned his loss in the community. He remains listed under Special Thanks on CREDITS - not current LLC management.
Zone design over three decades involved many builders. CREDITS notes that "zones have been designed by many immortals, many of whom are no longer with this game." Since 2014, day-to-day operation and new content belong to Materia Magica LLC and its Immortal staff.
I-MOTION engine generations
Materia Magica runs on the custom I-MOTION engine. Players usually speak in major release numbers - 3.2, 4.0, 5.0 - while staff see finer engine + build strings via the in-game version command.
Two different "version four" labels confuse newcomers. In 1999, Ingenii marketed Materia Magica as Moongate's fourth server generation (archive). Years later, I-MOTION 4.0 denoted a separate landmark reboot: thousands of pre-written story quests replaced the old random-goal model (questing guide / MobyGames). 3.2 was the last major 3.x line before that rewrite; testers spent months on dev servers moving from 3.2 to 4.0. A 3.2 dataloss global (staff reference) later entered legend through rainbow shards.
Documented patch help begins at 4.2 (housing build, Rune mayor elections, Proving Grounds rewrite - I-MOTION SERVER VERSION 4.2 UPDATES) and 4.3 (religion, Sigil Underground - MATERIA MAGICA I-MOTION SERVER V4.3 UPDATES). Sigil Underground and the religion shrines shipped with 4.3 in April 2021 (player logs and patch feature #7542, 27 Apr 2021, reference the opening). The late 4.x line includes 4.99 / 4.999... and the September 2020 4.9999999 reboot billed as the last before 5.0. Login banners and MUDStats now report Materia Magica 5.0.30 (2025-2026 session logs).
When staff recovered data from old physical servers in 2019, snapshots surfaced from late 2001, 2007, and 2012 - but not 3.2 itself. That gap leaves much of the earliest Moongate era in veteran memory rather than archived changelogs.
Relics of the Moongate and 3.x years
Long-time players still talk about quest-buy treasures from before the 4.0 economy rewrite - gear that could linger on characters who never fully migrated:
| Item | Veteran memory |
|---|---|
| The Comfy Chair | A celebrated quest purchase, often recalled at 1000 quest points |
| Sword of Vassago | Named for Vassago (Ryan Addams); often cited at 850 QP |
| Shield of Vassago | Frequently listed alongside the sword on returning 3.x-era characters |
These are not current official shop listings. Many pre-4.0 items were retired, re-priced, or survived only on legacy inventories. Other early-mechanic memories include no adventurer age before 3.2 and hungrier eat/drink routines than later systems provided.
2013-2014 LLC sale
MobyGames documents the July 2013 transfer to Materia Magica LLC - created by one of the game's immortals - and the April 2014 crisis when new programmers clashed with the new owner. The game neared shutdown or rollback until Vassago (Ryan Addams) returned to help steady operations.
Current CREDITS lists Tony Roma as President and Kevin Hovdestad as Game Director.
Backend infrastructure (2020-2025)
The real-world timeline lists these dates alongside other milestones. This section adds context only for the 2020-2025 infrastructure work.
Why Duende appears here. For many years Duende was one of the game's key developer immortals - the staff figure who publicly described the 2020-2021 C to Rust work and who appears on in-game patch logs through 2020. Veterans and in-game alt records link the immortal to the mortal Quiet. He is not named on the current LLC credits page (today's listed Game Engineer is Edward Boyd, under Game Director Kevin Hovdestad). News #525 (May 2025) states that part of the backend rewrite was implemented "around the time Duende left" - the extent of official wording about his exit; the LLC has not published a departure date.
C to Rust (late 2020 - 2021)
The I-MOTION server had long been implemented chiefly in C. In late November 2020, staff began porting selected infrastructure from C to Rust as a stability initiative. In April 2021, Duende told players that the team was migrating components during reboot cycles, that a trial rust-based production environment had been adopted after the experiment succeeded, and that a dedicated engineer had replaced the memory allocator in Rust to resolve unexplained crashes. He described the codebase at that moment as still predominantly C - on the order of 91% C and under 2% Rust - rather than a completed language change. In July 2021 the LLC advertised for a Rust Developer; official credits credit Nick Pollard as Rust Consultant. These changes were operational and did not alter the I-MOTION version banners visible to players.
Departure of Duende
Among the immortals who carried live development through the 4.x and early 5.0 era, Duende was one of the most visible - the same person many players knew on mortal characters, chiefly Quiet. News #525 (May 2025) refers to backend work implemented around the time he left and during the disruption that followed; staff have not posted a farewell or an exact date. Captured News archives show #445 (30 December 2022, subject Bosses and Marks, Holidays and Anniversaries) as the last article signed -- Duende in repo logs: new bosses and marks, a holiday Ivory Tower tour, and Duende's own 21st work anniversary note (started on MM projects in late 2001).
Backend rewrite (2025 onward)
On 2 May 2025, the LLC issued News #525, a Development Update on a continuing large-scale rewrite of backend infrastructure. Staff reported that an early phase of that rewrite had already shipped around the time Duende left and during the disruptive period afterward - characterising it as the first step of a longer project, not its completion. The article set goals of stability, security, and capacity for a first-party webclient; placed live development in maintenance mode until the rewrite was finished (internal target end of 2025); and promised further progress updates.
LLC News and patch notes describe this work as backend infrastructure. That is staff-facing product language, not a claim that the server remains a C codebase. The documented engineering programme is a C to Rust migration: Duende described the port and a rust-based production environment in 2021; the LLC hired for a Rust Developer that year; and official credits list Nick Pollard as Rust Consultant. News #525 is best read as a status report on the later phase of that same Rust backend work - stability and security goals, maintenance mode, and the reference to Duende's departure - rather than as a new, unrelated project. January 2026 patch notes again record backend infrastructure changes while the live game continues on 5.0.x login banners.
