Materia Magica (often MM) is a long-running text fantasy MUD set in the world of Alyria. For its first years the game was publicly known as Moongate Online - usually shortened to Moongate. This article traces that real-world lineage from the Ingenii years through today's Materia Magica LLC, alongside a concise sketch of Alyrian history, geography, and politics. For in-game canon, start with THE STORY OF ALYRIA and Welcome to Alyria. Alyria Online is a fan reference site, not the game operator.

From Moongate Online to Materia Magica
Moongate began in the mid-1990s as a custom codebase that diverged from the Nevermore ROM lineage. Ryan Addams advertised early builds on rec.games.mud.diku as a ROM 2.3/2.4-based MUD with extensive additions. He founded Ingenii Interactive (~1995, Austin, TX) to publish the game; the early web lived at ingenii.com, with players connecting to hosts such as moongate.ams.com port 4000 before the modern materiamagica.com era.
In 1996, Vassago released automated questing snippet code to the wider MUD community - quests with random goals on quest request. Many other games adopted variants of that pattern. Materia Magica itself would later abandon pure automation in favour of authored story quests.
By November 1999, Ingenii announced that Materia Magica would be the fourth generation of the Moongate Online Interactive Entertainment Network, targeting beta 1 May and release 1 June 1999. Ryan Addams called it "the future of Moongate Online, and the continuing story of the world of Alyria." The first three Moongate server generations are what veterans later describe as pre-3.2 play - a long formative period before the numbered I-MOTION lines that followed. The Java Moongate Client still carries that launch name.
Through the 2000s and 2010s, live development added clan alliances, invasions, favour points, ship PK, the Sahuagin race, the Knave class, and many other features documented in community histories such as MobyGames. Religion and the Sigil Underground map arrived much later, with the I-MOTION 4.3 update in April 2021 (MATERIA MAGICA I-MOTION SERVER V4.3 UPDATES). Peak concurrent players in period write-ups often reached the low hundreds at busy hours.
July 2013 brought the sale from Ingenii to Materia Magica LLC, formed for the purchase. April 2014 saw a public ownership crisis: new programmers clashed with the new owner, the game neared shutdown or rollback, and Vassago (Ryan Addams) returned to help stabilize operations. Ingenii no longer runs the live game; development continues under the LLC (CREDITS).
Today Materia Magica remains free to play at materiamagica.com (ports 23 and 4000), with browser access through the Java Moongate Client. A dated summary of launches, engine generations, ownership changes, and recent infrastructure work appears in the real-world timeline below.
